I grabbed the biggest piece of paper I had, a few Sharpies, and I got to work decoding everything. I started with what I thought was the center of the problem, added a few main branches, and then took the time to isolate every thought and place it somewhere on the map and link it to whatever I felt it connected to, keeping a maximum of 3 links to things. The magical thing about the world is that everything is connected. Unfortunately, that doesn’t work well with the categorical brain that we are taught to develop and it easily gets overwhelming. So I controlled it a bit.
When I was done, I realized that all of my issues did, in fact, stem from one main problem, and whatever things were also problems, it turns out, were just examples that solidified my issue. It was refreshing to see it from a different perspective and be able to distance myself from it.
I noticed there were other elements that I clung to because something magical had broken the cycle and I worked to figure out how that happened and if I could use it to break the cycle again. I realized the extent of my control in specific situations and it was easier to let go of those that I didn’t.
I learned a lot of things about myself that helped calm me down and I was satisfied to feel a positive shift in my confidence. However, looking at this mess made it seem overly negative still, so I turned the page over and forced myself to make an equivalently positive one. I started with The main issue (same as negative) in the center, then branched out to all the positive events that had come about as a result of moments where I trusted myself and made good choices. I was relieved to see that it got as big as the first mind map.
I was also surprised to see that one element, which I had been afraid to place down earlier, actually had its’ place linking the positive and the negative together. Turns out I have balance in my life after all.
You should try it :)
Tu devrais l'essayer :)
