Y'était time for reality. I am bilingual. My entourage is bilingual. My art is bilingual. I spent time in the Quincaillerie Fanzine Expo yesterday. It was really nice to meet so many from the world of comics. Olivier Carpentier, who gives BD classes at Lajeunesse community center in January. Fanie, who brings out the humor of everyday life. Laurence Lemieux and her cute and weird collages. The dude who made "l'academie des chasseures de primes" Other crazy artists like Jeik Dion. I also got permission to go and disturb Julien and Caro at Studio Lounak anytime :) You can be sure that I will take advantage of this opportunity! I can't wait 'til January in order to start my work seriously full time, but I still have to organize the financial aspect of the Young Volunteers program and finish my application for a contest to win15,000 Euros from Glénat!!!
The second I walked into the building where I had my final interview, I knew what was going to happen. The walls are decorated with black and white pictures from Montreal way back when... I remember dreaming of a building like it, in the same location, and knowing it would change my life. In the dream, I needed to remember what this place was, but I couldn't because I'd never actually been.
Now, it may be too early to know if today was life changing, but I know it feels good, and it feels right. I know I can reach people and help make the world a better place in a smallish and artsy-fartsy way. And I'm going to have a hell of a good time doing it :) I have the crew at Studio Lounak backing me up, and my friends, family, and other people who believe in my project and feel touched by it. I have the Jeunes Volontaires program to thank for allowing me to work on this graphic novel project at full time for a whole year. Thank you!!!!!!! Now, you may begin to be bombarded with messages regarding this project. More than usual. Please don't freak out; embrace it! And send me your feedback anytime, anyplace! Positive, negative, whatever! I'm here to learn, people! Come at me! I took a walk around town the other day and I came upon a beautiful but troubling artwork of a melting polar bear made of ice and revealing its bronze skeleton...
Also this week, I finished the description of my 3 stories and I'm finishing up the first drawings of Alex, the main character for the 3rd story I called "Fable". It's about a person who struggles with their physical body relating to societal norms. It'll be good enough for the final interview on Thursday. I'm so excited!!!!! AND I created my very own font out of my hand writing!!! Now I'll be able to cut and paste rather than hand write every bubble!!! Fun stuff! Go check out myscriptfont.com. It's not perfect, but a lot of fun, and definitely good enough for now! Also, keep a weather eye on the horizon because I've got a Kickstarter project coming up in 2016!!! It's all about funding the printing and bookmaking parts of the project when all 3 stories will have been finished. Special treats for those who help out the most, so, make sure to keep some holiday cash in order to show your support! I'm so excited I'm not even sure what to write down. I've had to write a list of things I want to say in order to keep some order :)
I went to Gatineau to the Rendez-vous de la BD last weekend and met some incredible people whom I was deeply inspired by. As usual, I chatted a bit with the lovely Gautier Langevin, ran into some printing Montrealers who go by the name "La logique du Calendrier", met a budding artist called Sacha and seriously considered sending a part of my comic through Planches magazine. The highlight was meeting Julie Rocheleau, whose style is impeccable, blending a near Lautrec rough pencil line with solid and contrasting colors, witnesses of the digital age. Her story is also quite impressive, at least from my perspective: it seems everything just fell into place. Her advice: meet people, work with people, love it. In BIGGER news, I passed the second interview for the Jeunes Volontaires program and have my last interview next Thursday. I will know then if I get help for funding my project (and my foods) and in preparation for this (also just for kicks) I've subscribed to a 3-month comic book workshop by Olivier Carpentier, who collaborated on Far-Out with Gautier. It's taking place at the Centre Lajeunesse starting January. I'm also planning on subscribing to the CEGEP du Vieux-Montreal's workshops by Jimmy Beaulieu later in 2016. Last but not least, I've been doing my homework: live drawing at Dawson this week. I remember having the same model almost 10 years ago during my first university-level drawing classes!!! It was fun to see him as an older person but I really went overboard with the exaggeration for some of the drawings... :) |
