Joyeux anniversaire, blogue!
Happy birthday blog!
Joyeux anniversaire, blogue! I'm celebrating the first year of my blog with a headache on its 9th day and a need to show Zoe the dog and 2 live model drawings I made on Monday. This instead of the progress made on Cyclone, cause there's really not much progress and I'm sick of seeing it 'cause it should be finished but coloring 32 pages is really, really long... Note to self: all other comics will be in black and white unless I can hire a colorist.
Happy birthday blog!

I am SO tired! I spent the day finishing artworks so I could apply to some art shows this year. The whole time, I was questioning myself about the fact that maybe I want too much and I should just focus on one thing. It's *surprisingly* gotten complicated to manage a full-time comic artist career... Anyway. Still hoping to get into the community-oriented Les fenêtres qui parlent, Accès Public (2e édition) and the Georges Vanier cultural center (or maybe not). There's also the Jeux de la Francophonie, but I doubt I'll get into that... and I'm not so sure I want to find myself in the Ivory Coast in July 2017... And Linda Luttinger (amazing artist, who came to a nice concert with me yesterday) and I want to plan a gallery show sometime soonish. Temporal was the name we came up with, to match the theme of time. Both images posted here were made with that in mind. I went to Salgood Sam's studio today too, and got a nice tour of Photoshop, learning amazing tricks specific to comic making. My mind was blown and I realized the only reason I still use Painter is because I'm irrationally stubborn... Speaking of which, Salgood Sam put up a new post on his website containing a very extensive amount of info on grants and funding. Good reading for empoverished artists. Speaking of extensive amounts of work: I'm likely going to submit a joint project for the next lalogiqueducalendrier annual collective, with the wonderful Cathon. Since the cat story, I'm kind of hooked on short stories... AND I'm sending a sample of my cat comic to Distroboto: awesome old cigarette vending machines that's been transformed into a mini zine machine! They keep very few of the earnings, so that's a great bonus. PLUS I got accepted to Comic-Con Quebec as an artist and that's super exciting but it also brings about a lot of anxiety... I wonder if I'll have enough material to sell and if I'll make the exhibitor costs back up in sales... Good thing this is a great year to experiment! Thanks again to the Youth Volunteer program for allowing all this to happen for me :) ...and now I'm off to correct Cyclone's color flats... yay... (it's fun, it's just really REALLY long)... and it'll be even longer because I'm going to a meditation resort for the next two weeks and won't be able to work on it... oh well... that's life I guess. LOTS to do and not enough time to do it all in.
Just went on the ride of a lifetime!!! And it's only the beginning! The Festival for francophone comics in Quebec (FBDFQ) was incredible. A full weekend of networking, friend-making, discoveries and much, much learning! I'm totally ready to be an exhibitor next year! Here's the top 5 things I learned:
Finally, here's the top 5 awesomest people I met this weekend (there's more though!):
Naturally, I want to thank the Studio Lounak and Front Froid for being the best mentors ever, and I want to specifically mention Miguel and Benoit of the Mystérieux Étonnants, who I met there for the first time and who welcomed me into the family as warmly as everyone else. I wouldn't be anywhere near where I am now without you all, and I can't wait to move into the studio with you next month! PS: The images below are of yesterday's live model drawing at Dawson, the books I got during the weekend, the artwork inside the main entrance of the Congress center where most of the action was this weekend, and my 2 favorite artworks at the National Art Museum (the first by Leduc and the second by Pellan).
Things are starting to go really fast. Finished a short comic (which has been added to the art page), went to a brand new networking event (they're still looking for business people to participate into the program), discovered new artists, created a LinkedIn (to appease the demanding public- for real), must finish line-art cleanup (which certain computer programs are making very difficult) and color and texture Cyclone, and am currently preparing for this coming weekend (french quebec comic book festival in QC City) by making a batch of 'zizines' and promo postcards for Nuances. PS: if anyone is interested in getting there, Orleans Express offers bus tickets at only 25$! First off, I have to say that I've heard so much about Meags Fitzgerald that I don't know why I didn't actively seek her stuff out until now. Plus, she's a friend of some friends of mine so I really have no excuse... She made a first graphic novel about her passion, called Photobooth: a biography a few years ago, which is as intimate as it is enthralling, then went ahead to create Long Red Hair, which I haven't read yet, but am expecting to buy at TCAF this year. As an added bonus, her website is pure eye-candy. Sadly, I'll miss her presence at the Salon BD Montreal, this 28th of April, organized by Salgood Sam, but I hope to have a chance to chat at TCAF! That said, check out her stuff! I went to my last comic book class given by Olivier Carpentier the other day and rushed home to finish the mini comic I had been creating for the class. I'm excited to hand out some sample in the form of mini zines (apparently called 'zizines'- let's spread that word around a little, shall we?) at the next conventions, though I'll have to translate it first in order to head to TCAF in a few weeks. I've added the comic to the art page of this website but I'll post it here too. There was a lot of editing involved in the making of it and I realized I really missed the convenience of computers to fix up my mistakes. Though it was oddly satisfying to see it finished once scanned, as all the white gouache and different blacks from different (now dead) markers that were present on the original pages magically disappeared with a light dabbling in levels. Finally, I survived my big networking event last night. I started with some wine to calm my nerves and busied myself with looking at the different kiosques (especially the one giving out Decompoz magazines about Montreal's art life). When finally came the time to meet our designated partners, mine was nowhere to be found. I sadly and awkwardly passed the time with Frederic Drouin, owner of the magnificent nature-escape, the Covent in Val-Morin. When I finally found my "binôme", I knew the organizers had made a fantastic choice. We're both interested in comic books, graphic novels and drawing, we agree about the necessary balance between technical drawing and simplicity in order to achieve expression and relatability, and both of us are shy around people. I'm excited to learn from him the creation and management of companies as well as marketing and communications from the standpoint of someone with a personality similar to mine. And now, on to the pictures: Ça commence à aller vite!
Following the inaugural newsletter for the graphic novel NUANCES last January, I wanted to give you a quick update on what's happened since and what'll be happening next! part 1 : CYCLONE Everything has been drawn, inked (with pencil), scanned and adjusted to the right proportions for the book! All that's left is add color and text! part 2 : IS&DES I learned a lot about creating graphic novels during my first attempt that I managed to put into practice for this one. The script was written, and thumbnails drawn while lounging in Mexico. The pencilling stage has now begun. WHAT'S NEXT? The creation of the last part of the graphic novel should begin in July. I will be present at many events to network and promote my story: Projet A144, FBDFQ, TCAF, FBDM, etc. The funding campaign is moving forward! More on that in the next newsletter. And if you missed a lot? Click any of the archives on the right to catch up and see the project come to life!
I Finally finished inking Cyclone!!! I scanned it right into my computer and started formatting... until I realized my math is terrible... and I messed it up. I drew my story semi strip and semi manga style regarding bleeds and I really made things more complicated... Turns out: Bleeds are usually 0.125 inches around, which you have to adjust if you want extra space at the bottom for page numbering. It's important to remember that when making the document to copy and paste the images in, you add 0.125 inches times 2, something I forgot to do... The trim zone is added to the bleed- this is the area you need to make sure not to put anything important in, usually a half inch on either side, with a bit more on the bottom for page numbering. It also doesn't help that I have been using the wrong programs. As much as I love Painter, it's not ideal to make a book from... now thinking of getting *gulp* Photoshop... and InDesign for PDFing. I also discovered a new artist that makes really entertaining how-to videos and whose Patreon is very active. You really feel like a good buddy getting good news every day. Plus, his style is really cool. I spent some time painting a birch tree mural on a friend's bedroom wall and going to a live model drawing session. Finally, this Saturday I'm going to a big networking event for artists and entrepreneurs and I'm really excited but also a little nervous for it. I'll have a chance to learn more about marketing & communications, but that means I'll be surrounded by tons of fancy-dressed people i don't know... Wish me luck!
