The Festival for francophone comics in Quebec (FBDFQ) was incredible. A full weekend of networking, friend-making, discoveries and much, much learning! I'm totally ready to be an exhibitor next year!
Here's the top 5 things I learned:
- NEVER be mean, in stories or in person. you never know when you'll need them to be nice to YOU. And anyway everyone there has the most important thing in common with you: the love of comics!
- NO substitutes. Cut out as many middle-men as possible and do it in person as much as possible.
- Book signing is an ART. Learn to instant-sharpie and remember to write the name of the person on a separate sheet of paper in case you make a spelling mistake
- FOOD, DRINK & SLEEP is super important for presence and endurance. If you can't bring those, have an assistant you can trust help you out.
- COCKTAILS ARE KEY. The best time to meet people and make friends is when they are tipsy. But you don't have to join them in drunkedness to be accepted by them.
Finally, here's the top 5 awesomest people I met this weekend (there's more though!):
- The dudes at the Shoppe à Bulles: Paul Bordeleau, Djief (who's into swing), Vallerand, and, more specifically Mikaël, who's currently working on an incredibly beautiful 1930's New York gangster story. They all have a studio above the gorgeous Maison de la Littérature in QC City.
- Some crazy dudes like Fred Auln, who constantly criticize societal habits in the funniest ways
- The Pow Pow people: awesome Cathon, sweet Zviane, and hilarious Samuel Cantin
- The dudes with Remi Paradis: LE David, Dez, Drako & Tarasque
- Copinet & Copinot: Otherwise known as Julien and Guillaume
Naturally, I want to thank the Studio Lounak and Front Froid for being the best mentors ever, and I want to specifically mention Miguel and Benoit of the Mystérieux Étonnants, who I met there for the first time and who welcomed me into the family as warmly as everyone else. I wouldn't be anywhere near where I am now without you all, and I can't wait to move into the studio with you next month!
PS: The images below are of yesterday's live model drawing at Dawson, the books I got during the weekend, the artwork inside the main entrance of the Congress center where most of the action was this weekend, and my 2 favorite artworks at the National Art Museum (the first by Leduc and the second by Pellan).
