Received a letter from the official-sounding IDNS (Internet Domain Name Services Inc) urging me to pay them tons of money to keep my domain name. This was in fact a technique to allow them to buy my domain name and sell it back to me at twice the price. I almost got served. Thanks to Gautier and his expertise, I was able to dodge that one.
I received an email from a prominent art magazine called Applied Arts, who was interested in showing my art and who 'chose' me out of millions of others (whoopee). They said they would offer me a 1/4 page ad, a web ad, a web folio, and fancy postcard send-outs... for 500$.
This poses a difficult question which leads into the really uncomfortable world of 'how much is an artist worth'? I've met so many people intent on showing their art that they are willing to forego standards (that should be written into laws) such as contracts defining insurance policies and commission percentages.
In a way, the comic book artists are slightly better off, book stores being obliged to take 40% on a book- this is not negotiable, and contracts that protect their earnings and rights regarding authorship. Unfortunately, I still hear of many people getting screwed over by un-written laws regarding book price changes (without notifying the artist/author), supply&demand issues, and self-promotion.
It's a scary world out there... got to keep positive!
Also, I should be moving in to a new space at Lounak Studios. I'll be sad to leave the Grover but it's cheaper, more likely to advance my career, not surrounded by crazy parties that play too much bad music, and not filled with oil paint smells- to which I am definitely allergic... :(
Aaand: just wanted to ad that there were many beautiful artworks in Mexico City that I wanted to share here :)
