I read “It’s a Good Life if you Don’t Weaken” by Seth. The style was simple, colors too, worked with the lines to make a unified whole. I found it interesting that the colors served to define shadows and angles, or to separate different planes, or sometimes different objects. What I mean by that is that some objects had a frame of color around them, like an aura, and it helped them stand out, without the style really going out of character. The story itself was like an autobiography, typical of Seth. I liked that the narration was white on black… wonder how that was done. The book speaks to artists mostly; who else would enjoy such introspection and a search for some mysterious and unknown artist? You really get a sense of Seth’s personality, too, the end product being a weird type of hipster monster… kind of like my own work…!
I then read Le Seigneur de Saint-Rock by Valmo (illustrator) and Francis Desharnais (writer). It was a stumble into a whole geek universe that I just couldn’t quite capture. Dungeons & Dragons jokes, LARPing and Lord of the Rings references, and a whole bunch of magical creatures that I could never categorize. I mean, I know the basics, but I’ve never been really all that interested in fantasy and I think a lot of this precious gem was lost on me. I could never appreciate its true value and I hope to pass it onto someone who will know how to enjoy it properly. Now, aside from the fact that I’m too OCD to ignore the fact that the speech bubbles aren’t marked by a closed line, and that my ADD makes the lack of frame difficult to control where my attention goes to and I end up seeing the whole page all at once and being overwhelmed and not knowing where to start, I really loved the frequent cameos of this one lovely Quebec City neighborhood that I got the chance to know a little on my last trip there. It’s always exciting to point and say “hey! I went there!”. But my favorite part was definitely the way the artist drew music, smoke, and magic. The story, a typical Quebecer life filled with problems related to apartments and condos, was given a really original fantasy twist, and made a lovely little comic with characters that you get quickly attached to and hope to see them on their next adventure soon!
I really enjoyed getting the chance to read some comics and I hope to get to reading some more soon. For now, I’ve got a whole line of events coming up:
- May 13th: TCAF and my workshop on comics and well-being at 10am in the Writer’s room
- May 14th: TCAF
- May 20th: Porchfest in NDG, MTL where I’ll be selling my posters, t-shirts, and books at the Food Depot’s opening concert, then walking around and enjoying music on the different porches of the neighborhood
- May 21st Porchfest in NDG, MTL where I’ll be selling my posters, t-shirts, and books at the Food Depot’s closing concert, then walking around and enjoying music on the different porches of the neighborhood
- May 26, 27, 28: FBDM at Lafontaine Park
